Perceptual Sensitivity to Stress in Native English Speakers Learning Spanish as a Second Language

Second language (L2) learners of Spanish whose first (L1) is English tend to find lexical stress patterns difficult acquire. This study investigates whether such difficulty derives, at least in part, from an obstacle encountered during perceptual processing: reduced sensitivity distinctions. Participants were adult L1 L2 various proficiency levels. The experiment was a categorical matching task with triads auditory stimuli minimally contrasting (target) or segmental composition (baseline), ABX task. results show that more accurate the baseline condition than target condition, suggesting relative other contrasts. reduction accuracy, however, restricted trials which items not adjacent, further phonological processing working memory rather categorization. default routines learners, optimized for their (not L2), may be responsible acquisitional obstacles this feature language.
